Mere minutes after Saturday ‚s Section 1A semifinal, junior Cassie Thomas tweeted „All I can say is, I have nothing to say … # Numb. „
The numbness undoubtedly stems from the fact that No. 3-seeded Northfield appeared to have outplayed No. 2-seeded New Prague on the road with a section title game Bertha on the line.
But Northfield was overwhelmingly out-manned on Saturday, spending more than half the night in the penalty box – 28 total minutes on seven penalties, two of which were five-minute majors (boarding and checking from behind).
Toss out New Prague ‚s three power play goals and the two teams would have been deadlocked 3-3 and headed to ověřte. But penalties, Northfield ‚s season-long Achilles‘ heel, Ended its 2011-2012 season at New Prague as the Raiders Fell 6-3 and Ended the season 9-16-1, 2-10.
The Trojans (11-13-1, 5-6-1) advance to play No. 1-seeded Red Wing on Thursday in the Section 1A final at Owatonna.
„Five-on-five, we’re a better team then they are,“ coach Brent Bielenberg said. „We outshot them tonight, too, and yet it was unfortunate the number of penalties we had. And some of the calls against us were just because we were hustling Trying to make a play. „
New Prague had gotten the best of Northfield in both Missota Conference contests this season, winning both tightly played games 5-4 each time.
„We played awesome tonight and it sucks that our season is over now,“ senior Becca Schultz said. „Am not blaming it on the refs, but they seemed to be one-sided on calling things.“
New Prague finished the night with four penalties, totaling eight minutes.
Northfield Dominated the first period, outshooting the Trojans 14-6. Yet if it weren’t for Schultz ‚s goal with 14 seconds Remaining in the session, Northfield would have been down 1-0 at the first Intermission.
Tied 1-1 in the second, Laine Fischer found Annie Pumper for an easy one-timer right in front of New Prague ‚s net, giving the Raiders a one-goal advantage.
After New Prague knotted the game at 2-2 with just three minutes Remaining, a boarding call against Northfield ‚s Maggie Cloud put Northfield down a skater.
The Trojans capitalized, because with 39 seconds left in the second period, New Prague scored to enter the third period up 3-2.
„I wished the referees would have put away the whistles, but we couldn’t do anything about that,“ Bielenberg said.
However, just 43 seconds into the final period, Pumper found Cassie Thomas and the junior scored a short-handed goal with Northfield still down a skater thanks to the five-minute major.
The 3-3 ty lasted just 13 seconds as the Trojans scored their second power play goal of the evening. New Prague would record one more power play score, and one even-strength Tally, to win 6-3.
„This year, our chemistry was awesome but it was a rebuilding year defensively,“ said Schultz, the team ‚s only senior.
With the loss, Northfield misses out on Repeating the program ‚s unprecedented trip to the section finals last year.
„It was a great season,“ Bielenberg said. „They came into their own, even with unknowns on defense and goaltending.“
